The difference between OLT, ONU, router and switch

First, the OLT is an optical line terminal, and the ONU is an optical network unit (ONU). They are both optical transmission network connection equipment. It is the two necessary modules in PON: PON (Passive Optical Network: Passive Optical Network). PON (passive optical network) means that the (optical distribution network) does not contain any electronic devices and electronic power supplies. ODN is all composed of passive devices such as optical splitters (Splitter) and does not require expensive active electronic equipment. A passive optical network includes an optical line terminal (OLT) installed at the central control station, and a batch of first-level matching optical network units (ONUs) installed at the user site. The optical distribution network (ODN) between the OLT and the ONU contains optical fibers and passive optical splitters or couplers.

Router (Router) is a device that connects to various local area networks and wide area networks in the Internet. It automatically selects and sets routes according to the channel conditions, and sends signals in the best path and in order. The router is the hub of the Internet, the “traffic police.” At present, routers have been widely used in all walks of life, and various products of different grades have become the main force in realizing various backbone network internal connections, backbone network interconnections, and backbone network and Internet interconnection services. The main difference between routing and switches is that switches occur at the second layer of the OSI reference model (data link layer), while routing occurs at the third layer, the network layer. This difference determines that the routing and the switch need to use different control information in the process of moving information, so the two ways to achieve their respective functions are different.

Router (Router), also known as gateway device (Gateway), is used to connect multiple logically separated networks. The so-called logical network represents a single network or a subnet. When data is transmitted from one subnet to another, it can be done through the routing function of the router. Therefore, the router has the function of judging the network address and selecting the IP path. It can establish flexible connections in a multi-network interconnection environment. It can connect various subnets with completely different data packets and media access methods. The router only accepts the source station or The information of other routers is a kind of interconnected equipment at the network layer.
